Essential Oils vs. Fragrance Oils: Which Should You Choose?
When you shop for handmade soap, deodorant or wax melts, you’ll often see products scented with either essential oils or fragrance oils. Both can be useful, but they come from different sources and create different scent experiences.
What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are concentrated aromatic materials obtained from plants, commonly through steam distillation or cold pressing. Because they come from botanical materials, their aroma can vary somewhat from crop to crop and from one essential oil to another.
Examples we use in Primm Farms products include lavender, tea tree, lemongrass, eucalyptus, peppermint and citrus essential oils.
What Are Fragrance Oils?
Fragrance oils are formulated aromatic blends created to deliver a particular scent profile. They can reproduce scents that don’t exist as practical essential oils, such as bakery, seasonal and complex fragrance blends, and they generally provide more consistency from batch to batch.
That makes fragrance oils useful for scents such as Pumpkin Cheesecake, Amberwood Moss and Clean Linen.
Which One Is Better?
Neither category is automatically better for every product or every customer. The better choice depends on the scent you enjoy, the product being made and the specific formulation.
- Essential oils are useful when you prefer recognizable botanical aromas such as lavender, peppermint or lemongrass.
- Fragrance oils make a much wider range of scent profiles possible and are useful when consistency or a scent such as bakery, linen or seasonal fragrance is the goal.
- Unscented products remain an option for customers who simply prefer products without added scent.
